Iron deficiency can causes tiredness, lack of energy, brain 'fog' and anaemia. For those with some heart conditions having a good ferritin level is very important.
Iron deficiency has many causes which may require further investigations including gastroscopy and/or colonoscopy. We are happy to organise these if required.
You can replace iron levels with oral medications, however some people are unable to tolerate this because of side effects ie. constipation, or the effect or replacement is too slow.
Intramuscular (usually in the buttock) injections are painful, discolour the skin and require multiple injections over time.
However, providing iron by infusion allows for rapid restoration of the body’s healthy iron levels with relatively few side effects.
Side effects from the new formula iron infusions are uncommon and most people will not experience any.
The most common side effects are nausea, dizziness, headaches, stomach upset, low phosphate levels & muscle or joint aches or pains. There may be some irritation at the cannula site for a number of days following the infusion. In rare cases, where the cannula becomes dislodged during an infusion, the skin around the injection site may become permanently discoloured (however, risk is less than 1%). Serious reactions are very rare.
Prior to receiving an iron infusion with us, you must obtain a prescription and have this medication provided by a pharmacy.
Our rooms can help with this - please contact us on 9456 9077.
Cost - $290 + medication cost* (Cost from 1st Jan 2023 - subject to change)
*(Medication cost for Ferinject 1000mg is around $ 38 for PBS indications)
Your GP should consider whether further investigation of your iron deficiency is required.
